IPsec as a means of protection at the network level.

Обновлено 08.10.2025 05:37

IP Security is a set of protocols designed for encryption, authentication, and protection during the transport of IP packets. It currently includes almost 20 proposals on standards.

In the first implementation, IPsec consisted of three algorithm-independent basic specifications published as the RFC documents "IP Security Architecture", "Authentication Header (AH)", "Encrypted Data Encapsulation (ESP)" (RFC1825, 1826 and 1827).

At the moment, the IP Security Protocol working group is also developing key information management protocols. The task of this group is to develop the Internet Key Management Protocol (IKMP), an application-level key management protocol independent of the security protocols used.

The concepts of key management using the Internet Security Association and Key Management Protocol (ISAKMP) specification and the Oakley Key Determination Protocol are also being considered. The ISAKMP specification describes the mechanisms for matching attributes of the protocols used. And the Oakley protocol allows you to install session keys on computers on the Internet. The key information management standards being created may support Key Distribution Centers similar to those used in the Kerberos system.
