ICMP packets that report errors.
ICMP error messages are sent in cases where it was not possible to perform any action on the network, for example, to deliver a packet to its destination. In certain situations, this can be of significant help in identifying machines running on the network.
I'll give you a small example. The ICMP Destination Unreachable (port unreachable) message received in response to a network packet indicates that the required port on the node is closed, but the node is accessible because the response has arrived.
Using ICMP error messages to detect devices is limited to triggering an error message on the node under test. Since this is usually done using other protocols (not ICMP), these methods are mentioned below.
